How Frame The Moon Brought “Freckles” to Life

The Cologne-based indie duo Frame The Moon uses the power of nostalgia and, with their latest music video for the song Freckles, creates a special connection between the past and the present. Simon Schiller and Lena Schütten, the creative minds behind the band, had their converted their videotapes to digital with MEDIAFIX, allowing them to dive deep into the world of memories. In an interview with MEDIAFIX, the two musicians share insights into their personal story and the creative process behind their musical project.

From audition preparation to passion

Frame The Moon consists of Lena Schütten and Simon Schiller, who met in 2015 on a musical path that would change their lives. “We originally founded our band as preparation for the entrance exam at music college. In the end, only the two of us continued the project, and we have been active under the name Frame The Moon since 2020,” Lena explains. The duo has now released eight singles and is about to release a debut EP.

Frame The Moon’s sound is characterised by a blend of nostalgia and melancholy on the one hand, and optimism on the other. “Our musical style could be described as museful indie pop. Lena sings and I mainly play synthesisers, so the music also has a bit of an 80s vibe.” Lena and Simon develop the lyrics and song ideas together. “The themes are connected to what is currently happening in our lives and what is on our minds at that moment,” Simon explains.

The road to Freckles

For their music video for Freckles, the duo decided to bring childhood memories back to life by digitising video tapes. “The song is about connecting memories and everything you have experienced,” says Lena. “And of course, childhood is part of that.” The images in the music video show Lena and Simon as children – on holiday with their families, at birthday parties or playing with their siblings.

Digitisation was a crucial step in keeping this past alive – not only for the music video, but also for their own families. “After the digitisation, we watched the footage together with our families. It was lovely to see, after all those years, how everything had developed – both the people and the places.”

Memories like freckles

Freckles is more than just a song; it is an invitation to embrace life, create memories and show courage. Simon explains: “It’s about looking at old memories, photos and videos with relatives and realising that there’s nothing to regret. You have a kind of treasure chest of memories that you can open again and again.”

In the song, Lena sings about “freckles on my soul”. “It’s about collecting memories like freckles on your soul. The song is about finding beauty in small moments and not being afraid to create new memories. It’s about appreciating the past without being afraid of the future,” Lena shares.

Simon adds: “In life, unpleasant moments sometimes happen too, such as break-ups or deaths. In those moments, when you’re not feeling so good, you can look back at old memories. It gets better when you look at the pictures or videos.”

Working with MEDIAFIX

For Frame The Moon, choosing to work with MEDIAFIX was the right decision. “I knew we had the old video tapes, but I didn’t know how to transfer them,” says Lena. Finding a suitable provider to digitise Hi8 tapes proved difficult. “We asked around everywhere to find out how they could be digitised, and with these tapes in particular it was complicated. We were glad to have found MEDIAFIX.”

The duo were also impressed with the result of the digitisation. “It turned out perfectly, I’d say. We’re very happy with both the quality and the speed,” Simon notes. Lena, who was in direct contact with customer service, was equally enthusiastic: “I was very happy with the result. Everything actually worked really well, from the consultation to the digitised videos.”
