
Nowadays, finding a Hi8 or 8mm camcorder to play old tapes is no easy task: no new models are manufactured anymore, and second-hand devices are becoming increasingly rare. Here is what you need to know to recover your video recordings, protect your memories and choose the best solution for your situation.
Hi8 and 8mm tapes: understanding the different formats
At first glance, all 8mm tapes look similar. However, they may contain three different types of signal: Video8, Hi8 or Digital8. This distinction is essential, because the cassette size alone, or the number 8 on the cassette, is not enough to determine which camcorder can play it.
Video8: the original format
Launched by Sony in 1985, Video8 was the first 8mm format intended for the consumer market. Its small cassette, measuring around 95 × 62.5 × 15 mm, made it possible to design family camcorders that were more compact than the VHS devices of the time. The analogue signal offers a horizontal resolution of around 240 lines. Video8 was mainly used between 1985 and 1995.
Hi8: the high-resolution version
Introduced in 1989, Hi8 – short for High-band 8mm – improved on the Video8 format by increasing the resolution to around 400 horizontal lines, close to S-VHS quality. Hi8 and Video8 tapes have exactly the same dimensions, but they do not record the same signal. In practice, a Hi8 camcorder can usually play a Video8 tape. The reverse is not true: a standard Video8 camcorder cannot decode a Hi8 recording.
Digital8: digital recording on analogue cassette
With Digital8, Sony kept the shape of Hi8 and Video8 tapes but replaced the analogue signal with a digital DV stream. This format appeared in the late 1990s, particularly in the DCR-TRV range. Some Digital8 camcorders can also play older analogue Hi8 and Video8 tapes and then convert their signal to DV for transfer to a computer. However, this backwards compatibility is not systematic: two Digital8 camcorders that look similar may have different playback capabilities. The model manual therefore remains the key reference before buying.

The labels “ME” (Metal Evaporated) and “MP” (Metal Particle), often visible on Sony Hi8 tapes, describe the magnetic tape technology. They do not indicate whether the recording is Video8, Hi8 or Digital8. A cassette marked “ME” or “MP” is therefore not enough on its own to identify the compatible camcorder.
Finding a camcorder for Hi8 tapes: the current market
No new Hi8 or 8mm cassette camcorders have been manufactured for more than 15 years. To play these small tapes, you therefore have to turn to the second-hand market. However, the age of the device matters just as much as its model number: a theoretically compatible model may be unusable if its heads, belts or mechanism have aged badly.
The most sought-after Sony models for playback and digitisation
Sony marketed the majority of Hi8, Video8 and Digital8 camcorders still available today. At present, searches on search engines and resale platforms often focus on the following ranges:
- Sony CCD-TRV series (e.g. TRV65, TRV108): these analogue Hi8 camcorders have an AV output and generally also play Video8 recordings. They are suitable for analogue capture using a capture device.
- Sony DCR-TRV Digital8 series (e.g. TRV320, TRV361, TRV480): some models play Digital8, Hi8 and Video8. Their i.LINK/FireWire output can then transmit a DV stream to the computer.
- Sony DCR-TRV740: this Digital8 model has USB and i.LINK/FireWire outputs. To transfer the contents of a tape, the i.LINK/FireWire connection remains the most suitable, as the USB port on these older devices does not always offer the same options.
Where can you find these devices?
Hi8 camcorders are mainly found on Leboncoin, eBay, Rakuten, sometimes even on Vinted, as well as at car boot sales and flea markets. Prices start at a few dozen euros for an analogue device sold without any guarantee that it works, and can exceed €200 for a tested, backwards-compatible Digital8 model supplied with its power adapter. This price difference makes sense: on a device that is more than 20 years old, the phrase “tested for playback” is much more valuable than simply “switches on”.
Risks to consider before buying second-hand
- Dirty or worn video heads: the image shows interference, horizontal bands or disappears completely.
- Loose or brittle transport belts: the cassette loads badly, no longer moves or refuses to eject.
- Faulty capacitors: the camcorder does not start, switches itself off or works unstably.
- Dead battery: this problem is almost normal after so many years; above all, check that the mains power supply is included and works.
Before buying, ask the seller for a short video showing the camcorder playing a cassette. A stable image and a mechanism that loads, plays, rewinds and ejects correctly are much more useful proof than a photo of the screen switched on. A device sold as “untested” should be considered potentially defective.
Why 8mm tapes deteriorate over time
A Hi8 tape does not automatically become unreadable after a precise number of years. Its condition mainly depends on how it was manufactured, used and stored. However, tapes recorded in the 1990s or early 2000s are now several decades old: even when they appear intact, playback should no longer be considered harmless.
What accelerates deterioration
Video is recorded in a thin magnetic layer held on a flexible base by a binder. When this structure ages or is exposed to poor storage conditions, the tape can lose stability. Several factors accelerate this process:
- Humidity above 60%: it encourages mould and can alter the surface of the tape.
- High temperatures: repeated exposure to more than 30 °C weakens the binder that holds the magnetic layer.
- Flat storage or storage under a pile: prolonged pressure can deform the housing or the tape pack.
- Direct light: it accelerates ageing of the housing and certain internal cassette components.
Visible signs of a damaged cassette
Always examine the cassette before inserting it into a camcorder. Sticky, creased or squeaking tape, or tape that leaves residue, can indicate binder degradation. Whitish deposits are more likely to suggest mould. In these situations, testing it “just to see” can do more harm than good: the cassette may become further damaged and contaminate the camcorder’s video heads.

Digitising a Hi8 tape yourself: method and equipment
You can digitise a Hi8 tape yourself if you have a compatible camcorder in good condition, the right cables and a computer capable of receiving the signal. The method changes slightly depending on whether the recording is analogue or Digital8.
Second-hand Hi8 camcorder or digitisation service: which should you choose?
The best choice depends less on your level of curiosity than on four concrete factors: the condition of the tapes, the number of tapes to process, the equipment already available and the time you want to invest. Buying a camcorder can be worthwhile for a large collection in good condition, provided you accept the setup, testing and real-time capture. For just a few tapes, buying the device, capture box and cables can quickly cost more than a digitisation service.
When a professional service is the better choice
A cassette with an unusual smell, deposits, creased tape or a sticky appearance should not be tested in a second-hand camcorder. Poor playback can make the damage irreversibly worse. Using a professional is also relevant if you do not know the exact format, do not have any compatible device or want to avoid setting up technical equipment for only one or two tapes.

How to store Hi8 tapes properly before digitisation

Store Hi8 tapes upright, in their cases, in a dry room where the temperature remains stable. Cellars, lofts, garages and car boots often combine humidity and temperature fluctuations, so they are poor storage locations. Also avoid exposure to sunlight and stacks of tapes lying flat. Before any playback, check the condition of the tape. If it has deposits, creases or a sticky appearance, do not persist with an old camcorder: it is better to have it checked before risking damage to the recording.
