VHS Cleaning with MEDIAFIX

Mouldy VHS tapesOld VHS tapes are often much more than just a storage medium. They preserve personal memories, family moments, and unique recordings from decades past. However, these valuable tapes are often at risk: due to improper storage or their age, many tapes are now dirty or damaged.

The problem: such tapes can often no longer be played back properly, and digitisation becomes difficult or even impossible.

In this article, we’ll show you some methods to clean your VHS tapes yourself and a reliable alternative in case you are too afraid to damage the tape: our professional video tape cleaning for VHS and VHS-C.

When dirty video tapes can no longer be played

Many customers are familiar with the issue: videotapes have been stored for years in attics, basements or garages. Moisture, dust and temperature fluctuations can cause mould or other deposits to form on the tape material.

The consequences can be serious:

  • severe picture distortion and dropouts
  • unreliable or impossible playback
  • in the worst case, damage to playback devices

Especially when it comes to unique memories like weddings, childhood footage or long-past family moments, there is no second chance. But how can you clean your VHS tape? Let’s have a look!

Cleaning a VHS tape manually

The first option that comes to mind when cleaning VHS tapes is to do it manually. This method is normally used when you don’t have an electronic tape cleaner or if you haven’t achieved a satisfactory result with it.

In this case, you’ll need to wear cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils or dirt to the tape. Then, gently open the tape flap and pull out about 30 cm (1 foot) of tape. Using a cotton cloth or a tissue, wipe the exposed tape and remove dust. If you were thinking about using chemical cleaners or water, we strongly advise against it so as not to damage the tape.

When you’re ready, wind the cleaned tape back into the cassette and expose another portion, repeating the same procedure.

Remember: Be careful when cleaning the VHS tape manually, as you may damage it!

VHS cleaning with an electronic tape cleaner

If you want to avoid cleaning your VHS tape by hand, using an electronic VHS tape cleaner is a safer method. This device is easy to use, but you’ll need to invest money and time just to clean your tapes.

Important: before cleaning your VHS, make sure to carefully read the instruction manual to ensure you’re using the cleaner properly.

Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Run the tape through your VCR and fast-forward it to the end.
  2. Insert the VHS into the electronic tape cleaner and start the cleaning process.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the VHS cassette shell. Do this only if you need to clean your cassette internally and if you’re confident in handling delicate tape components.
  4. Moisten a cotton bud with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol and gently clean the inside of the VHS cassette, especially corners and grooves, or any other areas not in contact with the tape spools.
  5. Screw the casing back together and perform a second cleaning cycle with the electronic cleaner to target the opposite reel.
  6. Open the cassette once again and swab the other side’s reel chamber. Avoid touching the magnetic tape itself. We recommend doing this if both sides of the VHS tape have visible dirt.
  7. Screw the casing back together completely.
  8. Once you’re ready with cleaning your VHS tape, rewind the tape fully and check the playback quality directly in your VCR.

As you can see, this process is not easy and should be done with extreme caution. That’s why we recommend that you clean your VHS tapes with MEDIAFIX. We’ll take care of both the cleaning process and digitising your tapes at your preferred quality level.

Cleaning a VHS tape with MEDIAFIX: How it works

To achieve the best possible results, MEDIAFIX uses a specially developed cleaning system that gently and effectively removes deposits from videotapes, even in cases of heavy contamination or mould.

To make sure we only carry out what’s truly necessary, each cassette is carefully inspected beforehand. This helps us determine whether cleaning is needed to improve readability and ensure the best possible results during digitisation.

The inspection costs only £4.99 per cassette. Cleaning is then carried out only if it is actually beneficial and necessary.

Why VHS cleaning is worth it

Professional cleaning often makes the crucial difference between “beyond saving” and “successfully digitised”.

By removing dirt, dust and mould professionally:

  • picture distortions are significantly reduced
  • the chances of complete digitisation increase considerably
  • the risk of tape damage during playback is minimised
  • even tapes that were long considered unusable can often be made readable again

Thanks to this specially developed process, over 99% of problematic videotapes can be successfully prepared for digitisation.

What once seemed like lost memories can become a valuable digital treasure again.
