Durability of 16mm films

Act now and have your 16mm films digitised before these risk factors destroy your unique memories:

  • Heat: Heat causes the tapes to dry out and become brittle.
  • Moisture: Moisture can lead to mould growth.
  • Chemical reactions: Chemical processes like the vinegar syndrome, can dissolve the film strip.
  • Wear and tear: The more often you play your films, the more worn the narrow films become.
  • Dust and dirt: Dust and dirt that accumulate on your 16mm films over the years can affect their quality.
  • Declining film quality: The longer you wait to digitise your films, the worse their quality will become.

Save your precious memories! Convert your 16mm film to DVD or to USB.

How to transfer 16mm film to digital?

You have different options to transfer your 16mm film to digital. Most people use DIY methods like 16mm to digital converters. You can do this process at home. The converter will scan each frame and save the footage as a digital video. However, home converters lead to low-quality results when compared to professional digitising services. Moreover, you’ll need technical skills and time for setup and post-processing.

For this reason, the best way to convert your 16mm film to digital is to send it to a professional digitising service like MEDIAFIX. MEDIAFIX will scan your 16mm film with a high-quality film scanner designed specifically for delicate reels. Each frame will be digitised in Full HD resolution and the results will be high-quality.

Another great benefit is that you can book additional services like cleaning to get an even better result. This way, you will save time and your memories will be safely transferred to a storage medium of your choice (DVD, USB stick, hard disk or digital files on Dropbox).

Don’t hesitate and transfer your 16mm films safely with MEDIAFIX!

How long does it take to convert 16mm film to digital?

The 16mm film scanning at MEDIAFIX can last between 2 and 6 weeks, depending on the number of film reels.

Your 16mm films will be digitised in Full HD quality and you will get your reels, together with your digitised films (on a USB stick or DVD), back via post. Furthermore, you can also get them back as digital files on Dropbox.

What size is 16mm film?

16mm film gets its name because the film strip is 16 millimeters wide. For the Standard 16mm film, each frame is about 10.26 mm × 7.49 mm (aspect ratio: 1.37:1), while the Super 16mm has a picture area of 7.41 mm by 12.52 mm (aspect ratio: 1.67).

16mm film with sound usually has one row of perforations along one side and a soundtrack running along the opposite edge. Silent 16mm film often has perforations on both sides of the strip.

How to view 16mm film without a projector?

You don’t have a projector anymore? No problem. There are still many ways to watch your 16mm films again and relive your precious memories with your friends and family.

The first popular option is to use a film editing viewer. You can watch the 16mm movies on its small built-in screen or project them onto a table. An alternative is to use a DIY lightbox to manually view your memories frame by frame. Another way is to use a magnifying glass or loupe to inspect the film. A popular DIY method is to use a digital camera or smartphone to capture each frame, or a professional film scanner to convert it to digital.

However, these methods are often slow and they lead to low-quality results. The best way to watch your 16mm films again without a projector is to use a professional digitising service like MEDIAFIX. MEDIAFIX has a team of experienced technicians who, with high-quality scanners, will carefully transfer your 16mm films to digital formats like USB stick, DVD, or direct download on Dropbox. Your 16mm films will be digitised in Full HD quality, so that you can relive them whenever you want on modern devices like TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone.
