What are 8mm tapes?

8mm tapes are a particular type of videocassette format. They are called “8mm” because the tape inside the cassette is 8 millimetres wide. There are three main types of 8mm tapes:

  • Video8: Video8 is the oldest of the 8mm tape types. It was launched in 1984 as a compact alternative to VHS and Betamax. It was mostly used to record home videos, and it is an analogue format.
  • Hi8: it was released in 1989 as an improvement of the Video8 format. It is still analogue but is characterised by better picture quality compared to other 8mm tapes. Some Hi8 tapes also have sound.
  • Digital8: also abbreviated to D8, it was developed by Sony in 1999. Digital8 cassettes are exactly the same size as Hi8 or Video8 cassettes: 95 mm × 62.5 mm × 15 mm. The main difference is that the signal is encoded digitally, unlike the other 8mm tapes.

It doesn’t matter which of these three types you have, we convert all 8mm tapes to digital according to your wishes.

How long do 8mm tapes last?

The lifespan of 8mm tapes depends on the conditions in which they’ve been stored. Their average lifespan is 15 to 30 years. However, the quality of the tape can start to degrade sooner if kept in poor storage conditions. For this reason, to ensure their longevity, you should keep your 8mm tapes in a cool and dry environment, avoiding sudden temperature changes. Even if stored in the best conditions, however, they will deteriorate. The only way to be sure that your memories are safe is to transfer them to digital files.

Who can convert 8mm tape to digital?

If you’re looking to convert 8mm tape to digital, MEDIAFIX is an excellent choice. MEDIAFIX has over 12 years of experience in the field of analogue media digitisation. They can convert every 8mm tape type to digital: Video8, Hi8 and Digital8. Moreover, they can also convert other types of videotapes. You can choose the quality level of your digitisation and the device you want your videos saved on. For example, you can convert your 8mm tape to DVD, USB stick, hard disk or even get your digitised files on Dropbox. Both your original 8mm tapes and your chosen device will be sent back to you.

How can I convert 8mm tape to digital?

To transfer 8mm tape to digital, you have two options.

  1. Convert your 8mm tape at home: you’ll need a functioning 8mm tape player or camcorder, an analogue-to-digital converter and a computer with video editing software. If you want to choose this method, here’s how to proceed. First of all, you need to connect the 8mm tape player to the converter, which will then be connected to the computer via USB. With appropriate video capture software, record your tapes and save them as digital files (usually in the MP4 format). We don’t recommend this method because it requires a high amount of time, a good technical setup and a functioning 8mm tape player, which is not easy to find nowadays. You’ll also need to edit the digitised videos afterwards to achieve optimal results.
  2. Use a 8mm tape to digital conversion service: we recommend this method as it’s easier if you’re not tech-savvy or if you’re looking for a fast solution. You’ll just need to send your 8mm tapes to an experienced 8mm tape converter like MEDIAFIX, and they’ll handle the entire process for you. Pack up your 8mm tapes safely and send them to the MEDIAFIX logistics centre. MEDIAFIX will digitise them at your preferred quality level and on the chosen storage device: USB stick, DVD or digital files on Dropbox. Furthermore, you can book a post-processing service. This means your video will be edited and its quality improved. MEDIAFIX is a really good option for you thanks to its best price guarantee: your 8mm tapes will be digitised from only £5.99.

How much does it cost to digitise 8mm tapes?

Which quality level do you recommend?

It depends on the quality of the original videos and your needs. If you just want your 8mm tape converted but do not care about the quality of the result, then choose the Budget quality. Your 8mm tape will be saved on a DVD.

If you are looking for higher quality, we recommend choosing either the Standard quality (720 × 576 pixels) or the Premium quality (1,920 × 1,080 pixels). In both cases, we’ll convert your 8mm tape to a USB stick. If quality is really important to you, we recommend the Premium quality. Otherwise, in most cases, the Standard quality will be enough. Want to get an even better result? Then book our post-processing service: we’ll improve the colours and contrast of your digitised videos.

What can I play 8mm tapes on?

If you still have 8mm tapes at home but don’t have a camera and don’t know how to watch them, we can help you. You cannot play your 8mm tapes on a VCR player because there’s no 8mm to VHS adapter on the market. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Watch your videos with an 8mm tape player: available in both large and compact versions, you just have to pop in the 8mm cassette and play it.
  2. Use an 8mm VCR combo: it’s a device that can play both VHS and 8mm tapes.
  3. Convert 8mm tapes to digital: since 8mm players are now obsolete and it isn’t worth buying them anymore, we recommend using an 8mm tape conversion service like MEDIAFIX. This way, you’ll just need to send your tapes, and they’ll be converted to a USB stick, hard drive or digital files. If you choose MEDIAFIX to digitise your 8mm tapes, you’ll even have the possibility to enhance the video quality up to Full HD or to book extra video editing services for even better results.

Can you transfer 8mm tapes to USB?

Yes, at MEDIAFIX we convert your 8mm tapes to USB from only £8.99. It doesn’t matter if you have Video8, Hi8, or Digital8, we convert every 8mm tape type. After receiving your USB stick, you’ll just need to plug it into your Smart TV or laptop and enjoy the digitised videos.
