Main cine formats we can convert:

8mm film to digital: Also known as Standard 8 or Regular 8, it was introduced in 1932 by Kodak. As the name suggests, the film width is 8mm. The frame rate is typically 16 fps for silent films and 24 fps for cine films with sound. It was mainly used as a home format.

Super 8 film to digital: Released in 1965, this format has the same width as Standard 8. However, its image quality was much better than Standard 8. Another great improvement was its cartridge loading system, which made it easier to use. Super 8 films can be either with or without sound.

16mm film to digital: Released in 1923 by Kodak, the Standard 16mm film was mainly used for newsreels, documentaries, and TV. Home movies in this format were less common but still possible. Like other cine films, this format can have a soundtrack or be silent.

9.5mm Format: Introduced in 1922 by Pathé, it was mainly designed for home movie enthusiasts in Europe. It became a popular format thanks to its efficient use of film stock, maximizing frame size.

35mm film: Introduced in the 1890s by Thomas Edison and his associate William Dickson, 35mm film became the standard for commercial cinema. The standard format is 35mm wide and has four perforations per frame on each side. It remained the dominant format in professional and commercial contexts until the advent of digital photography. It offers higher image quality compared to home formats like 8mm or 16mm.

With our WETGATE cleaning, even old cine films can be optimised for a maximum film experience. Our service includes the following:

  • Reduction of dust and dirt
  • Reduction of scratches
  • Extended durability of your reels

Our post-processing improves the quality of your cine film digitisation. Here are the major improvements:

  • Film stabilisation
  • Tone, contrast and colour adjustments
  • Simple film grain and noise reduction

While most cine films are silent, some do include sound. Would you like to convert cine films to digital with sound? We can digitise them, providing a complete film experience and preserving even more precious memories.

How can I tell if my cine film has a soundtrack?

To find out whether your film has a soundtrack, take a closer look at the film tape. If there’s a soundtrack, you’ll find an orange-brown magnetic tape approx. 0.5 to 0.8 millimetres wide. Sometimes there are two sound tracks. If your cine film has a soundtrack, we can also digitise it. If you’re not sure whether your cine films contain a soundtrack, we can easily check for you. Of course, we only charge for soundtrack digitisation if your cine films have a soundtrack.

By converting your cine films to digital:

How do I convert old movies to digital?

If you want to convert your old cine films yourself, you need the right equipment, technical skills, and patience. You’ll need a film projector or professional film scanner, a high-quality digital camera, and a suitable projection surface or capture system. Furthermore, video editing software is required to adjust frame rate, stabilisation, and colour correction for a better final result.

While converting old cine films yourself might seem like a good idea, it is time consuming, expensive, and often lacks the quality of professional digitisation. That’s why opting for cine film conversion through a digitising service is a much better option because it is more cost effective and hassle free than DIY methods.

Can film be converted to digital?

Yes, old cine films can be converted to digital formats. The quality of the conversion depends on the methods you use and the condition of the film. Here are the most common methods to digitise cine films:

  1. Using a film projector and a camera (low-quality method): with this method, you’ll project the film onto a screen and record it using a digital video camera. It is cheap and can be easily done at home, but it often results in flickering, distortion, and low resolution compared to professional transfers.
  2. Telecine transfer (intermediate quality): telecine machines can transfer old films to digital in HD quality but lack the detail and sharpness of frame-by-frame scanning. Some professional telecine machines are still sold on eBay, but are expensive and often require expertise to operate.
  3. Frame-by-frame film scanning (highest quality): this method is the one we use at MEDIAFIX. It is the best method because it capture each individual frame at high resolution. After that, the frames are assembled into a digital video file. It is the only method that ensures sharpness and colour accuracy.

How can I send my cine films?

You can send your cine films by post to the following address:

MEDIAFIX Logistics Centre
AMCO Park, Acanthus Road
Redditch
Worcestershire
B98 9EX

Which resolution is best for me?

With MEDIAFIX, you can choose among 3 quality levels:

  • Budget quality (PAL): 720 x 576 pixels, suitable for viewing on small screens. If you choose this quality level, we’ll convert your cine film to DVD.
  • Standard+ quality (HD): 960 x 720 pixels, recommended for viewing on TVs, monitors or HD-ready digital projectors. If you choose this quality level, we’ll convert your cine film to USB and save it as an MP4 file.
  • Premium quality (Full HD): 1,440 x 1,080 pixels, suitable for viewing on larger displays. If you choose this quality level, we’ll convert your cine film to USB and save it as an MP4 file.

Unsure about which quality level to choose?

We recommend choosing the Standard+ quality (HD) if you want a simple transfer in standard format. If you prefer higher-quality cine film digitisation, you can choose the Premium quality (Full HD). With this option, we’ll upscale your original video to increase the resolution for modern devices like PCs and Smart TVs.

Who is the best company to convert old movies to digital?

MEDIAFIX is a well-known and reliable brand in the film conversion industry. It was founded in 2012 and, over the years, it has grown significantly. How long are my cine films?

To find out how long your film is, take a look at the film spool. You should be able to read there the length of your film in metres or feet.

Alternatively, you can measure the diameter of the film spool and use the illustration below to estimate the length. Please note that with this method you can only determine the maximum length of your cine film. The actual length is often less, so the costs for digitisation will be lower.

Super 8 film lengths and sizes

Can I digitise cine films with sound?

Yes, MEDIAFIX can convert cine films with sound. We digitise Super 8 films and other cine film types that have a magnetic soundtrack, which can be identified by an orange-brown stripe.
