Microfilm and microfiche scanning at MEDIAFIX

Microfiche and microfilm are mainly used to reproduce archival documents.
Museums, archives, and libraries in particular have preserved their documents on microfilm or microfiche. Filming documents and images was often preferred over photocopying, as it is gentler on the often very valuable and delicate materials. However, viewing microfilm and microfiche requires a special reading device, which is not only cumbersome but also outdated.

It is much easier to view microfilm and microfiche as digital files. By having your microfilms digitised, you can access your recordings anytime and from anywhere. Secure your valuable collection now by converting microfiche and microfilm to digital.

MEDIAFIX is your trusted partner for professional microfilm and microfiche digitisation, regardless of the condition of the originals.
With extensive experience digitising over one million media items per month and top rating on Trustpilot, MEDIAFIX has established itself as the market leader in the digitisation of analogue media. We guarantee the careful handling of your collection as well as professional support and scanning of your microfiche. Once your microfilms have been digitised, they will be sent back to you safely.

Our solution for microfilm and microfiche scanning

Convert microfiche and microfilm to digital with us! Here are your benefits as a business customer:

Your microfilms and microfiches are valuable and unique. For this reason, their security is important for us. We ensure the best protection for your media:

We distinguish between media that must be protected from spontaneous ignition (e.g. nitrate films) and media that has high historical and artistic value.

Both are stored in our fire protection cabinets. The media are only removed for digitisation and are immediately stored back in the cabinet afterwards.

The fire protection cabinets comply with current fire protection requirements. Every delivery is insured up to £150.000,00 at our insurance (Gothaer Versicherungsbank VVaG) while at MEDIAFIX.

In addition, there is an access control. Only our management and shift management have access to the cabinets to ensure that all requirements for a high level of data protection are guaranteed.

In addition to our protective measures, all the media is also carefully handled during the digitisation process. They are handled only with protective gloves or special tweezers. Removing and reinserting the media into sleeves is done only by trained personnel. Furthermore, the digitisation process is carried out using UV-friendly special lighting.

Within only a few years, MEDIAFIX became Germany’s biggest company for digitising images and films, considering the number of employees, the volume of converted films and images per month, sales and plant size. Since its founding in 2012, we have already digitised over 227 million media for our customers. Therefore, MEDIAFIX has established itself as the market leader for converting analogue media to digital in Europe.

Thousands of customers have already entrusted their old slides, negatives, photos, video cassettes, 8mm films, recording tapes and audio cassettes to us – and they are satisfied with the results. This is reflected in our top rating on Trustpilot.

Our company’s head office is based right in the heart of Cologne. Here, all of the media is digitised.

On an area of about 1000 sqm 120 experienced employees in customer service, digitisation, quality management, logistics, shipping and F & D do their best every day to give all this analogue media a digital future. In doing so, we all have just one objective: to save precious memories.

You will probably have several questions about your microfilm and microfiche scanning.

Mr. Andrew Asher is your contact person and is looking forward to helping you and answering your questions. Due to his experience in the key account segment, he knows how to meet your individual requirements and to find a suitable solution for digitising your microfilm collection.

      • Consideration of individual requirements for your microfilm and microfiche scanning
      • Creation of individual solutions for digitising your collection
      • Attractive additional services like cleaning, post-processing or image rotation
      • Expertise in the digitisation of large collections of microfilm and microfiche

Recognise the urgent need for action

The German government is planning to have their archive collection digitised by 2050. For a good reason: durabililty of analogue media depends on several factors:

age | material quality | temperature | humidity | storage | usage intensity

If your company, your institution or even you as a professional photographer or photo and video journalist want to give a digital future to your valuable analogue image documents, there is no other option than to have them digitised. Hesitating can mean that the media has to be restored, which is very expensive in terms of time and money. If you act quickly, you will not only benefit from faster availability, but also save money on restoring the damaged images and films.

How old are microfiche and microfilm?

Microfilm was created at the beginning of the 19th century by the French inventor René Dragon, but it became widespread only in the 1930s. It was first used in the banking sector and later gained popularity for making information more accessible than large collections of newspapers and historical records. The main advantage of microfilm was that information was stored in a more compact way than before.

Microfiche emerged as a further development of microfilm to make indexing and accessing specific documents easier. For this reason, it was used primarily for document storage in the 20th century, when it became the first choice for institutions, libraries, governments and other archives.

Can microfiche be converted to digital?

Yes, microfiche can be converted to digital. It’s actually the best way to access, share, search and organise its content. If you want to protect your documents from deterioration, we recommend scanning your microfilm and microfiche as soon as possible, before the films fade and become unreadable.

How do you digitise microfiche?

Digitising microfiche means converting the tiny images stored on the fiche sheets into high-quality digital files. The first step is preparing the microfiche for digitisation. We offer different types of cleaning services to remove dust. After the cleaning process, we scan the microfiche or microfilm and create digital images, e.g. in formats like PDF, JPEG or TIFF. We also offer other extra services like post-processing of the digitised pictures. Start an enquiry today and we’ll be happy to send you a customised offer according to your needs.

Is microfiche still used?

Even if outdated, some libraries, museums, archives, and research institutions are still using microfiche and microfilm. However, they are not the best option in terms of accessibility and searchability of the files. Furthermore, certain older types of microfilm, like cellulose nitrate films, are highly flammable and deteriorate over time, especially if not stored correctly. For these reasons, it is better to digitise your old microfilms and microfiches. At MEDIAFIX, we offer high-quality scanning services, adapting to your requirements.

How much does microfilm scanning cost?

The price of converting microfilm to digital at MEDIAFIX depends on the number of rolls you want to scan and any optional extra services you need. We recommend sending us an enquiry to get a quote or calling us directly at 020 3904438-0.

Can I scan microfiche on a scanner?

Yes, it’s possible to scan microfiche using a specialised microfiche reader and scanner, but it’s not the best option. First of all, they are quite expensive and the investment may not be worth it. Why pay for a scanner that you will only use once? Furthermore, especially if you have a large collection, you’ll still need a lot of time to digitise every item.

If you’re looking for a reliable digitising provider, at MEDIAFIX we offer high-quality scanning of microfiche and microfilm. Send us an enquiry today and we’ll contact you by phone to discuss your requirements. If you want, we can even send you a quote via e-mail. What are you waiting for?

Over 400 negatives were digitised within one week at MEDIAFIX and I was highly impressed by the result. No detail in the photos was lost and although the picture were quite aged, the colours could be reproduced very well.
