How we convert cine film to digital

After you have delivered your 8mm reels to us by mail or in person, we will digitise your 8mm films

  • in high quality for easy viewing on PC, TV and smartphone.
  • on a storage medium of your choice or as a direct download.
  • with the greatest possible care, GDPR-compliant.

After your non-binding request via the form, you choose how you would like to receive your 8mm films back:

  • as an MP4 file on a USB drive or via download to view your Super 8 anywhere and anytime
  • as a video DVD with menu for playback on the DVD player

Of course, both options are also possible and beyond that additional copies for your friends and relatives.

For delivery, you send your cine film to our MEDIAFIX Logistics Centre.

After we transfered your 8mm film to digital, you receive back the digitised film on your preferred storage medium or as a direct download. We will send your original and digitised super 8 movies back to you via postal delivery.

Highest demands for your 8mm movies: Our resolutions

With a resolution of 768 x 576 pixels, our PAL quality is suitable for playback on smaller screens.

Our HD quality offers you sharp images with a resolution of 960 x 720 pixels and is suitable for playback on modern devices.

With Full-HD quality and a resolution of 1,440 x 1,080 pixels, you can get the best out of your old cine films.

With our WETGATE cleaning, even old cine films can be optimised – for a maximum film experience. The following improvements are included:

  • Reduction of dust and dirt
  • Reduction of scratches
  • Extended durability of your reels

Our post-processing makes your digitised Super 8s shine even brighter. The following improvements are carried out:

  • Stabilisation of the film
  • Tone, contrast and colour adjustments
  • Simple film grain and noise reduction

Most cine films are silent films, but not all of them. We also offer digitisation with sound for your Super 8 – for a maximum film experience and even more saved memories.

How can I tell if my Super 8 film has a soundtrack?

To find out whether your film has a soundtrack, please take a closer look at the film tape. If there is a soundtrack, you will find an orange-brown magnetic tape approx. 0.5 to 0.8 millimetres wide. Occasionally there are also two sound tracks. If your Super 8 film has a soundtrack, we can also transfer it. If you do not have the confidence to check whether your Super 8 films contain a soundtrack, we will be happy to do this for you. The costs for soundtrack digitisation are of course only applied if your Super 8 films also contain a soundtrack.

Isn't it easier if I digitise my 8mm films myself?

For converting your 8mm film to digital independently, you need an original player, a video grabber and appropriate software. In 2016, Funai was the last manufacturer worldwide to discontinue the production of VHS recorders, and so-called S8 to DVD copiers are only available second-hand. Accordingly, it is costly to procure the necessary equipment. The time required corresponds to the playing time of the cassettes. Even if you do not have a large collection, digitising your Super 8 film with amateur equipment can quickly take several days of work.

MEDIAFIX converts cine film to digital starting at only £9.99 per reel and in first-class quality. The effort for you is minimal: We transfer your Super 8 movies to DVD, so you can enjoy your best memories comfortably on the TV or in MP4 format on USB stick for easy sharing with the family and for independent further editing.

Does my 8mm film have a sound track?

Most 8mm films are silent. The probability that your 8mm films have a sound track is not very high. To find out, you have to take a closer look at the tape. The sound track is noticeable by an 0.5 to 0.8 mm wide orange-brown magnetic tape. Sometimes there are even two sound tracks. If your 8mm films have a sound track, we can convert it to digital as well.

If you’re not sure if your reels have a sound track, we can do it for you. The costs for sound digitisation only apply, if your films have a sound track.

How long are my Super 8 films?

To find out how long your Super 8 film is, please take a look at the film spool of your Super 8 film. On these “film spokes” you will usually find scales on which you can read the length of your film in metres or feet.

Alternatively, you can measure the diameter of the film spool and use the illustration below to find out how long your Super 8 film could be. Please note that with this method you can only determine the maximum length of your Super 8 film. The actual length is often less, so the costs for digitisation will be lower.
