How can I tell if my 8mm film has a soundtrack?

To find out whether your film has a soundtrack, take a closer look at the film tape. If there’s a soundtrack, you’ll find an orange-brown magnetic tape approx. 0.5 to 0.8 millimetres wide. Sometimes there are two sound tracks. If your 8mm film has a soundtrack, we can also digitise it. If you’re not sure whether your 8mm films contain a soundtrack, we can easily check for you. Of course, we only charge for soundtrack digitisation if your 8mm films have a soundtrack.

Isn’t it easier to convert 8mm film to digital myself?

To convert your 8mm film to digital independently, you need an original player, a video grabber, and appropriate software. In 2016, Funai was the world’s last manufacturer to discontinue the production of VHS recorders, and so-called S8-to-DVD copiers are only available second-hand. All this makes it costly to acquire the necessary equipment. Meanwhile, the time required to digitise your 8mm film corresponds to the running time of the cassettes themselves, so even a modest collection could easily take several days of work with amateur equipment.

MEDIAFIX converts 8mm film to digital starting at only £9.99 per reel for top-grade quality. The process is simple for you — our experts transfer your 8mm to digital and save it on your preferred storage device.

  • Convert 8mm film to DVD: Perfect for watching your cherished films on your TV or PC.
  • Convert 8mm film to USB: Ideal for easy sharing with family or editing your videos further

Does my 8mm film have a sound track?

Most 8mm films are silent. There is a small chance that your 8mm film has a soundtrack. To find out, take a closer look at the tape. If there is a 0.5 to 0.8 mm wide orange-brown magnetic tape, that’s a soundtrack. Sometimes there are even two soundtracks. If your 8mm films have a soundtrack, we can convert that to digital as well.

Not sure if your reels have a soundtrack? No problem! Let us check for you. We only charge for the soundtrack digitisation if a soundtrack is present. We ensure your memories are digitised with care.

How long are my 8mm films?

To find out how long your film is, take a look at the film spool. You should be able to read there the length of your film in metres or feet.

Alternatively, you can measure the diameter of the film spool and use the illustration below to estimate the length. Please note that with this method you can only determine the maximum length of your cine film. The actual length is often less, so the costs for digitisation will be lower.

How can I watch 8mm film without a projector?

You can’t directly watch 8mm film without a projector, since it’s just a strip of film with tiny frames. However, you have a few options:

  1. Use a vintage film editor: these old, inexpensive devices with a tiny built-in screen were popular for editing home videos. You can still buy them second-hand on platforms like eBay. They’re fine if you want to check what’s on a reel, but not ideal for really enjoying the full film.
  2. Use a strong magnifier: you can also use a loupe or strong magnifying glass (at least 10x magnification). Simply hold the film up to a light source and look at it frame by frame. Also with this method, you won’t be able to enjoy the whole film.
  3. Digitise your 8mm film (best method): the easiest way to relive your 8mm films is to have them professionally digitised. At MEDIAFIX, we convert your 8mm film to digital formats like DVD or USB stick, so that you can easily watch them on TV, computer, smartphone or any other modern device.
