The history of the S-VHS tape

Developing the S-VHS cassette resulted in several improvements. S-VHS stands for “Super Video Home System”. Thanks to its higher bandwidth, it had a better resolution. Further disruptions were reduced by separating the video and the colour signal. From the outside there are actually no differences between a S-VHS and VHS, except for an “S” in front of the labeling. The S-VHS tape can range in length from 30 minutes to five hours, and it can’t be played in conventional VHS recorders.

It is similar when it comes to digitising S-VHS-C tapes. They have the same size as VHS-C and with an adapter they can be played in a S-VHS recorder. Here you can also find an “S” in front of the VHS-C labeling. The S-VHS-C cassette has a significantly shorter duration than the S-VHS cassette and was developed for portable camcorders.
